As a parent, try avoid open criticisim of the methods your teen considers as a way to create their new identity and enhance their sense of acceptance throughout adolescence year. Provide a sounding board, withhold emotional reactions, and provide sound, healthy feedback. This approach will protect the bonds of trust they have formed with you throughout their pre-teen years. You, as the parent can continue to provide them with a safe and non-judgemental avenue to share with you possible considerations of harmful or dangerous ways to “fit in” and feel accepted by their peers. If they share these unsafe ideas with you or you suspect they are choosing methods that endanger themselves or others, it’s be proactive, practice safe parenting, and address the concerns. Here at Waterford Academy LLC we offer a free assessment and drug urinalysis to determine whether or not your teen needs our services and if so, which of our offered programs can best help you teen. Your direct involvement and support will remain a vital part of their success at moving your teen to consider healthier decisions as they move towards adulthood.
